Micellar curcumin

NovaSOL® Curcumin

Micellar curcumin engineered for absorption.

Supplied by dsm-firmenich

Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid of turmeric (Curcuma longa). In its native form it is poorly water-soluble and poorly absorbed from the gut. NovaSOL® is a patented micellar form of curcumin from dsm-firmenich, designed to overcome exactly that limitation.

  • 185×total absorption (AUC) vs native curcumin
  • 277×peak plasma level (Cmax)
  • ~1.1 htime to peak (vs ~7.5 h for native)

The technology

NovaSOL® uses micellar solubilisation: curcumin is enclosed in food-grade micelles that are fully water-dispersible and stable across a wide pH range, so it stays in solution through digestion instead of precipitating out.

Measured bioavailability

In a randomised crossover trial in 23 healthy adults, plasma curcumin from the liquid-micelle form reached a far higher concentration, far faster, than from native curcumin powder. These figures are absorption (pharmacokinetic) measurements — not health claims.

Published research

One peer-reviewed human bioavailability study underpins the absorption data:

  • Schiborr et al. (2014)

Randomised crossover bioavailability trial in 23 healthy adults, comparing plasma curcumin uptake from native powder, micronised powder, and liquid micelles.
